What influence does the human mind have for the collective of humanity?
To explore the possibilities, we devote this issue of the newsletter to the Global Consciousness Project at Princeton University.
The following excerpts are from an article written by John Van Auken for Personal Spirituality, titled. Global Consciousness.
"Scientists are surprised by the ability of a little "black box" to report and graph influences from human minds. "The story of these black boxes, nicknamed "eggs," began in the 1970's with the work of Professor Robert Jahn at Princeton University. Intrigued by extrasensory perception, telepathy, and telekinesis (the ability to move physical objects without the use of physical forces), Professor Jahn and his colleagues developed a little "Random Event Generator" (REG). It is a small, simple computer about the size of a box of raisins and uses a computer chip almost as sophisticated as those used in today's calculators. The black box generates two numbers - a one and a zero - in a totally random
sequence, like flipping an electronic coin, heads or tails. The results are depicted on a graph and, according to the laws of chance and averages, should produce an equal number of ones and zeros, a nearly flat line on the graph. Any difference in this random chance would appear on the graph as arising curve, indicating that one number is occurring more frequently than chance."
"Also working at Princeton was Dr. Roger Nelson, who took Professor Jahn's random number generator to group meditations. The groups were collectively able to generate significant changes in the pattern of numbers coming out of the black box. Dr. Nelson was so surprised that he became devoted to the study of human extrasensory influences. Using the Internet, he connected up 40 random event generators around the world to his laboratory computer at Princeton. He ran the data-gathering operation around the clock, 24/7, generating millions of different pieces of data. Most of the time the graph was a relatively flat line, as one would expect. But then on September 6, 1997, something extraordinary occurred: the graph shot upwards, outputting a high shift from random output to recurring single number output. What event could have triggered such a dramatic
shift? An estimated one billion people around the world watched the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, at Westminster Abbey. Dr. Nelson was convinced that the concentrated emotional outpouring of a billion people influenced the random event generators. But how could they do this? And was it similar to the meditation groups and the individuals off the street?"
"The phenomenon could not be explained, so in 1998 Dr. Nelson gathered together scientists from all over the world to analyze the massive data. None of the scientists could give a reasonable explanation for the results. However, because the data was of such significance, they were resolved to expand the research, and the "Global Consciousness Project" was born. Sixty-five random-number-generating boxes are now in forty-one countries, each watched for nonrandom graphs. The Project's most startling results came on September 11, 2001, the day of the attack on the U.S. Not only did the machines report the results of these terrorist attacks as they occurred, the graphs reflected a dramatic shift four hours before the attacks actually took place! Somehow, human consciousness had already picked up on the impending attacks. This single precognitive influence on the black boxes caused the
scientists to ask if all of
humanity was unconsciously connected to some-collective subconscious in which activity of a few minds may be known by many minds before it becomes consciously perceived. It happened again on December of 2004, when the machines left their random output twenty-four hours before the powerful earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean triggered the deadly tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people and caught the attention and aid of the whole world."
"Dr. Nelson sees in the short term: "We may be able to predict that a major world event is going to happen. But we won't know exactly what will happen or where it's going to happen. Put it this way - we haven't yet got a machine we could sell to the CIA."
"… these mind-machines are of far less importance than the implications of these discoveries in terms of the human race. What his experiments appear to demonstrate is that while we may all operate as individuals, we also appear to share something far, far greater - a global consciousness."
Text below is directly from the website http://noosphere.princeton.edu/index.html:
"We have been collecting data from a global network of random event generators since August, 1998. The network has grown to about 65 host sites around the world running custom software that reads the output of physical random number generators and records a 200-bit trial sum once every second, continuously over months and years. The data are transmitted over the internet to a server in Princeton, NJ, USA, where they are archived for later analysis. The purpose of this project is to examine subtle correlations that appear to reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. The scientific work is careful, but it is at the margins of our understanding. We believe our view may be enriched by a creative and poetic perspective. Here we present various aspects of the project, including some insight into its scientific and philosophical implications."
"This figure shows the period from September 7th to 13th, and the time of the attacks on September 11 is marked with a black rectangle. You can see that shortly before the terrorist attack, the wandering line takes on a strong trend representing a persistent departure from what is expected of random data. A small probability envelope inserted at that point provides a scale to indicate the extraordinary increase in non-random deviation. The slope of the graph beginning just before the the first WTC tower was hit and continuing for over two days, to noon on the 13th, is extreme. An informal estimate for the probability can be made from its slope, and lies between 0.003 and 0.0003 (suggesting an odds ratio on the order of 1000 to 1). If we extrapolate the anomalous trend, it begins at about 04:00 (08:00 GMT), several hours before the first World Trade Center tower was hit, and the total length of this persistent trend is about 56 hours. The mean number of days between segments with a slope like this, continuing for so long, is on the order of 2300 days, which is consistent with the 1000 to 1 odds ratio suggested by the slope.
Also positive incidents influence the global consciousness
Contrary to what one might think when reading newspaper cover stories, the global consciousness reacts equally strong to positive and negative incidents.
During the four years evaluated within the Global Consciousness Project, worldwide holidays cause very high deflections from the randomness. Terrorist attacks and wars come second.
The war in Iraq is mirrored in the results, too.
Natural disasters that are obviously considered "normal" even if they initiate large catastrophes cause lower reactions.
The lowest deflections are measured during sports events and political occasions such as elections!

The Basics of Oneness (Oneness Technology for a New Age)
From the website: http://www/reconnections.net/oneness_index_htm
- All of life is a dream that is being experienced by the ONESELF.
- As is usually the case in dream interpretations-every person, object, or situation that appears in the dream is an aspect of YOU, the Cosmic Dreamer, and your entire universe is your mirror.
- You have chosen to incarnate into a physical universe. There is really only ONE PERSON here-one person who has divided him/herself into as many fragments of the ONESELF as are needed to portray a truth, feel a feeling, or learn more about the infinite Being which we all are.
- Just as there are many fragments seen within a universe (uni=one), so are there an infinite number of universes contained with the MULTIVERSE, which is a "wherehouse" for the storage and keeping of All That Is.
- Every person, object, situation, or location represents a VIEWPOINT for the Oneself to enjoy and observe the All That Is. You do not merely reside within a single physical body, though it may sometimes appear to be so. You are everywhere and you are everything.
- Truth is also everywhere, and in everything. In the Multiverse, there is a universe that literally honors and embodies every single belief or system of belief imaginable (and then some). There is no such thing as disagreement with a multidimensional reality. There are only variations upon a common theme. At the heart of each theme is always YOU.
- What separates each individual universe is the VEIL OF FORGETFULNESS, a semi-permeable membrane that surrounds each viewpoint and temporarily blocks remembrance of Self at all the other levels at which you exist. Like blinders on a horse, the Veil allows each separated viewpoint the freedom to experience its universe without being distracted by the other possibilities which are also available.
- Time and Space exist as punctuation marks in a limitless composition that is being written by the Oneself. They are notations, regulating the beat and measure for a concerto which has played and which will be played throughout all eternity. All time is now. All space is here.
- There is really only ONE Multiversal moment, divided into an infinite number of fragments, which are apportioned to as many universes as is required to embody everyone and accomplish everything imaginable (while always adding just a little bit more).
- All of the above applies to YOU, the ONESELF Cosmic Dreamer, unless you say otherwise.
The word enlightenment
conjures up the idea of some
super-human accomplish- ment,
and the ego likes to keep it that way, but it is simply your natural state of felt oneness with Being.
